The above image is typical of the workstations that those of us at my j-o-b are getting as part of our scheduled move to our new digs this weekend. To put it in context, we're up on the 7th floor with a tremendous view of the city. Each of our cubicles are up against a wall of windows that look out onto an open patio, stories over the historic part of town, with the big city in the distance.

Of course, you'd never know this looking at the picture. You'd almost think they actually don't want us to enjoy the view they spent gobs of cash to get. As for me, I'm planning a Shawshank style digging-of-a-hole in the cubicle wall from underneath a huge Rita Hayworth poster with a teeny tiny pick-ax. It may be a few years, but that's all it takes, really.

Pressure, and time....That and a big goddamn poster.rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-45829018167187579182008-11-24T09:41:00.000-08:002008-11-24T09:44:31.709-08:00Comic WIP
Couple of test pages for a webcomic I hope to launch very very soon. Apparently, I suck at such predictions.

I've been in desperate need of a new desktop for quite some time now, one starring my newest spy lady character. Yes, I know she looks like the esurance chick, but I hope I've at least made Vera not as annoying as she is.

Had to assemble quite a few reference images for this one. First off was the pose, which I got from this lovely photo by Then I dug up some head shots of Milla Jojovich, plus a frame from some old concert footage of Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite for the hair. Finding decent reference for her shiney leather catsuit was strangely very hard. I would've though there'd be an abundance of suitable images now that we're living in the future and stuff. Had to dig up some stills of the four chick jewel thieves from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. Even then, I don't think I followed it too closely. I think I made Vera a bit more diffuse, just because I likes the slightly grainy textute I was getting with the dodge/burn tool.

May update this one later. Want to design a sidekick for her. Got something in mind, so hopefully it'll be up soon.rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-21912117538703808612008-10-27T21:49:00.001-07:002008-10-28T06:37:01.725-07:00The Negotiator
Been awhile since I posted here, been spending too much time at deviantArt, so I thought I'd shared the love this time.

This one came to me in a dream. Popped into my head for an instant, then I told a friend about it, who finally clued me in to the fact that it would probably make a decent next project. Had to fudge the scale of the saber handle a bit in order to get it in the frame and still have room to show some of the blades.

As good a job as Ewan did in the prequels, Sir Alec is the definitive Obi-Wan, even if he had his misgivings about the ensuing fandom that sprung up as a result of Star Wars.

Sir Alec has always been one of my favorite actors. He did a near perfect Hitler in the made for TV film 'Hitler:The Last Ten Days." I even read someplace that he considered the Hitler role to be his favorite of his own performances. He also did a turn as Jacob Marley in "A Christmas Carol" and, of course, his acclaimed appearance in "Bridge On The River Kwai."

Sometimes I try to imagine what the prequels would've been like if they could've somehow cloned a young Alec for the role. THAT would've been sweet methinks. It almost would've redeemed George for the whole Jar-Jar debacle...almost.

It's late. I collapse now...*thud*rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-42504274362472264312008-09-15T08:46:00.001-07:002008-09-15T08:50:27.102-07:00UnfaithfulFor those who might be wondering, I've been posting on deviantArt lately. Really liking it there. Still wanna post here, but it might just be highlights from what I put up there, at least for awhile. I like have a couple of different places for my art, each for different audiences, though I'd have to change/delete a few of the pics on here to make that premise work. ^^;

The link is down to the right, where it says "Lotsa Lotsa Links", silly!rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-67002483208604754402008-08-25T21:20:00.001-07:002008-08-25T21:24:47.612-07:00Sketches!
More characters for my RP thread that I 'borrowed' from other, better works. Kovacs should be obvious to anyone who reads comics and/or keeps track of trailers for certain anticipated film adaption of a particular comic. Ethan is Samantha's younger brother, who's teamed up with Kovacs who, in my RP, has his own reasons for hunting Sam.

In the RP, Kovacs does NOT don his familiar 'face' nor does he go by his hero name. I wanted someone rugged and fit, and the unmasked Kovacs seemed to fit the bill. I also used Hugh Laurie from House as another model and merged the two of them. Acquired from a Sharper Image store in the mall, he's the best Hermod could come up with on short notice, plus he had a discount card.

Right now, he's helping Vera survive in the forest by procuring food for her. (Hey, he's trying!)

Winston's primary job is reconnaissance, stealthfully checking out enemy positions from above with his highly attuned optic sensor eye thingies. Unfortunately, he's a wind-up model and his spring does tend to give out at the worst possible times.

He has other abilities, but I'll elaborate more on the RP thread later. May reveal more to those who don't already know in future postings.

Beginning to think more and more that Flash is the best thing I've used yet for doing a cell-shaded look. Works great with either a Wacom or Cintiq and you don't end up tempted to play around with a lot of filters and effects. You just draw (and finish) the thing! I just might end up doing my comic this way, if I can get around my latest bout of writer's block...rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-27292070276468511652008-07-20T20:37:00.000-07:002008-07-21T06:56:08.262-07:00Holy crap, it's hot!AC is out again. Seems to be a karmic cycle for me. Every summer, no matter where I'm staying, an AC unit that I depend on for my very sanity either at work or home is destined to break down, and as always, it does so at the hottest time of the year. I only wish I could've said good-bye to her in person, but was unable to for reasons cited below.

Wish I could say that this latest round of postlessness was just due to losing my assigned kitty or to my usual procrastination, but this time it's more along the lines of the crappiest month of March I can remember having. At about the same time Sneakers was entering the final stages of the feline CRF she'd had for about 9 years, I had to go under the knife. Seems I had a little (i.e. painful) problem with my gall bladder and had to get it removed. A serious condition in itself, which ended up being complicated by the fact they had a hard time FINDING the damn thing.

See, many ages ago when I was but 4 days old, my pancreas had grown around my intestine, causing a blockage. The doctors had to conduct bypass surgery to correct it. No problem, except that now when they went down my throat, they couldn't find the duct or whatever where the gall bladder empties into my GI tract. This apparently was due to the bypass surgery altering my anatomy somewhat; they had to take an extra day or two to conduct an MRI and also to contact the hospital I was born in in an (vain) attempt to track down any records from the surgery I had three freaking decades ago. Meanwhile, all the bile that was building up in my system was giving me jaundice, turning my skin and eyes to a similar shade o' yellow as Yellow Bastard from Sin City.

Finally they wheel me into surgery, but not before I managed to cut up my face in a foolish attempt to shave using the cheap POS razors they had at the hospital. This resulted in me having 3 Band-Aids stuck around my mouth and neck, so must've looked like hell going into ER. Right before I went under, the doctor said that they couldn't remove it via the modern method, which seems to involve three small incisions, due to my prior surgery and that they'd have to do it old school, which involved open surgery and a larger scar. Fortunately, I'm happy to report the surgeons did a wonderful job and everything went more or less smoothly. He said afterwards that he had to take some time cutting through old scar tissue to get the thing out, but other than that, it was all good.

As of now, I'm pretty much recovered. The doctor says that no change in my diet is needed, except that my body will be slightly less efficient at breaking down fats, so I should have less of them, which is what I've been doing anyway.

Oh, and did I mention that I had my birthday in the middle of all that? Nothing makes you feel older on or near your birthday than going into surgery to get something removed. That and being stuck in a hospital alone with all your immediate family being 500 miles away, with the thought that something could go wrong and not being able to see them again beating around your head. I've never been comfortable being so far from home and these experiences just seem to underline that feeling in a big way.

Good news is that Dad flew down and managed to pick me up from the hospital. We hung out in the hotel and watched as much crappy TV as I had in the hospital, except that the Day's Inn had no AMC channel, which was the one lone beacon of slightly decent programing amidst a vast sea of unending crapola. Nevertheless, we made the most of it. We even managed to drive out to Annapolis and go over the Chesapeake Bay bridge, which is supposed to be five mile long. Then we saw the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, which had more to do with fishing than with any major maritime history. Dad saw most of it while I was too tired to do much walking and just hung out in the fornt office. Still it was good just to get out of that hotel room.

I've gone on a bit with this, and I don't want to bore the handful of readers I may or may not have, so I'll cut this short (guess it's too late for that though...:P) . There's more, but I'll save that for yet another angst-ridden rant somewhere down the line. If you gotten to this point, thanks for sticking around.

rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-79924125595636438832008-02-25T11:11:00.001-08:002008-02-25T14:03:49.691-08:00Glorious, Life Like-ish Color...
And yes, that's the logo for The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It works well most of the time, but there's still an issue with lines that you hope are being drawen smooth and thin being interpreted as big fat blotches. Methinks that the software wasn't design to keep up with how fast a user is used to drawing using a sketchbook. Between that that the not too infrequent crashes, there's a few kinks left to iron out. That being said, I still feel way more loose and comfortable drawing-wise in Flash than if I tried it in Illustrator. Eww...

Got another Kate in the works. Whoa! *dodges snowballs tossed by Satan, made possible due an abundance of snow in his unholy neck of the woods*

Been awhile since I posted actual art up here, so now I got my yearly quota out of the way. :P This sketch features the return of Kate, who was last seen in an earlier post and is a character in an RPG thread I occasionally post in. Not to put words in her mouth or to dictate to the audience what she's actually saying, but she's obviously a little peeved...

"Why yes, I'm well aware that some of the other girls are a bit jealous of me. It's NOT what I had in mind this year..."

Maybe I'll explain further at some future point. On the drawing side of it, I got to play with the Cintiq on this one. Flash and Cintiq seem to go real well together for me. There are a few annoyances, but nothing to make me turn to Illustrator *shudders*. Also, I've been practicing on drawing hands lately and I'm just starting to feel a teeny bit more comfortable with getting all the fingers into an expressive, natural position. Still need reference to pull them off, probably always will.rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-14117865014470782292008-02-05T12:50:00.000-08:002008-02-08T07:13:28.434-08:00The Changing of the ReelThough it pains me to do so, the time has at last come to retire my college era demo reel. Yay, though it hath served me well (eventually landing me my first professional animation gig), alas time has only made me see how much I didn't know back then. The guy in the orange Barney suit just moves all over the place instead of gesturing with anything resembling intelligible intent (though I guess it works for that particular character :P) The little puppet bit near the end of Dementia is still one of my favorite moments. The rest is either non-character work or stuff I could never get rendered, due to end-of-semester deadlines and (at the time) skill level restrictions.

But fear not! A new reel consisting of actual 'professionally made' material has been procured for your amusement.

This is but an early draft consisting of the best clips I currently have handy. As new stuff becomes available, I'll be tossing it in with the rest.

This will also serve as the vanguard for the newly redesigned piercedbrains.com site, which is also in desperate need of a make-over. Been training myself in Flash secretly, at night. (crap, shouldn't have posted that, ahh well...)

Won't be making anything too Flash-y (groan), but it'll hopefully be enough to allow me some control over the design of the key elements. I know I could go the easy route and just throw in some Google/Flickr plug-ins, but I guess I have a thing about sending the link to my supposedly professional site to a potential employer and having it just be a link to a Flickr page or be it's own page but have 'powered by Google' watermarks all over everything. Just call me Mr. Control Freak...rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-61142926292249248132008-01-29T18:36:00.001-08:002008-02-05T12:49:43.768-08:00Testing out a photstream plug-inWhat?

He's got a what? So sue me... (not really!)

More auto-bio cartoons, these two depicting my time as an ER orderly right after high school.

At one point, I was charged with taking the amputated foot of a patient down to the morgue. Having little practical experience in dismembered limb transport and disposal, I proceeded to immediately take said foot out of the ER and down the hall towards the elevator, in full view of anyone with a casual glance. While it was wrapped up heavily in teal bandages, it still retained the distinct shape of a foot, which is probably why my supervisor was so quickly able to pull me aside and insist that I simply place the foot onto a cart and cover it up with a towel.

Learn from my folly dear friends, so that the next time you have to carry a chopped off arm or leg around in public, you'll know what to do.
One of my weekly duties was the dumping of the excess fluids that came from a patient's body during surgery. They let them fill up in a large glass jug, which needed dumping into a drain when full. Where it went from there, I'm gratefully oblivious. Anything from knee fluids to God-only-knows-and-I-don't-wish-to-ponder went into this thing. Hence the reason I'm crunching my face as I dump the jug. Just trying not to die of some disease, no biggie. Can't remember if I ever wore a face mask, or if they just didn't give me one...rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-86554895934166157362007-06-11T14:16:00.000-07:002008-02-05T12:47:58.237-08:00Shop Class MemoriesThis sketch depicts the high point during the one and only time I ever set foot in shop class in college.

The incident illustrated thus went along the lines of 'Hmmm, still can't figure out why this acetylene torch won't come on. I mean I'm turning the knobs and everything and...hey wonder what that hissing noise means?', which was followed by said torch promptly bursting into flames, along with my thankfully gloved hand.

I therefore proceeded to wave my fiery piece of metal in the general direction of the teacher, who was chatting with another student and seemed either unaware or unconcerned with my plight. Can't remember how, but the flame was eventually extinguished with the help of another student.

Never set foot in shop class again. Took an F for it, but I firmly believe that not being all burnt to a crisp was more helpful to me post-college than mad welding skills.rorschachhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04366370390553732951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2935960459844208666.post-78460714439854557722007-06-11T08:48:00.001-07:002007-06-11T08:58:44.206-07:00Tina SketchesA sampling of the sketches I've been doing. Trying to squeeze in more sketchbook time lately. I think I'm getting better and more confident in drawing the main characters quick and easy, but still having them looking like I want. Yay me!

Most of these are of Tina, but I also threw in one of the scrawny sidekick I'm tentatively naming Opie. Don't ask me why Tina's sporting a bat. It just happened, okay?! ^^ But it does give me ideas for how she interacts with Chester, the still-not-quite-fully-designed-cat-mascot. Yes, she's going to have a bit of a creepy streak hidden underneath that wholesome G-Rated appearance...:D

Will post more as time permits. Hope to have some more of the other characters up.
